When the weather forecaster is expecting a freeze warning or a heat wave, chances are that an HVAC unit out there somewhere is going to need some attention. Although well-maintained units can last 15-20 years, they often need help along the way from an HVAC professional to keep up with our area’s weather. If you’re thinking of hiring a new company to work with, consider asking these questions:

Is their Air Conditioning and Heating Contractor License current?

You can look up a contractor’s license online and learn of any violations. Contractors should be able to show verification of insurance and bonding as well.

What kind of training or certifications do the contractors have?

North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certifications and others are a plus and show a contractor’s commitment to demonstrating competency in the field. If your contractor is a factory authorized dealer, they often get added training on top of their experience to really understand the ins and outs of that dealer’s systems. Many contractors just don’t take the time to stay current.

Will they answer your questions and provide a detailed quote?

Contractors should always be able to provide a detailed quote before work begins. Before installing a new system, they should be calculating heat load, air flow, and duct-work. A reputable contractor should be able to educate you about your system and answer all of your questions. Including information about any warranties.
